Kiss me Kwik

A couple of weeks ago I came across the wonderful work of Cassie Beck on Folksy.

I don't know much about photography techniques therefore I am unsure how it is achieved but the images have a wonderful nostalgic feel to them especially the scenic ones.
I saw this one shown and knew I had to buy it. I'm now looking out for a suitable frame and I can't wait to see it on my wall.

You And.....

Today I have been in my workshop creating a series of rings that I have had in my mind for a while, they are called 'You And....'.
There is one more to finish but I thought I would take some rough pictures of the others in the mean time. The top ring says 'you and me and tea', the bottom one says 'you and me we sailed the sea'.

Taking pictures of these for the website will be difficult because at no point can you see all of the text. I'm a little worried that no one will like them because i'm not sure the images I take will do them justice. This is the problem with using text in your work (which i love to do), you have to get really close which sometimes ruins the over all image and makes it lose context. I've had the same issue with my card and silver brooch designs.

Ah well, what am I to do huh? :)

It's Not A Bicycle, It's A Life Style

This is my beautiful bicycle that I brought last month, I've wanted one for years and so finally decided to treat myself. I brought it from www.dutchie.co.uk/. I decided to go for the three speed version but to be honest it wasn't needed. Worthing is relatively flat and yet the bike is so heavy that I have never been above first gear.

Cards Of Colourful Joy

I have been a very busy bee recently and have been adding to my card designs. I always wanted to adapt my line drawing cards into something colourful and so a few weeks ago I down loaded a free trial of Adobe Illustrator and I have been teaching myself the software. It's been frustrating at times but I think they look good. I sent them off this morning to the printers and I'm very nervous about the results.

Helen Sarah Vaughan

Trees and what notLast weekend my friend helen of http://helensarahvaughan.blogspot.com/ moved back up north, I am very sad to see her go. We got to know each other over the last 7 months and she is such a warm and lovely person and has been such a source of reassurance to me (I am constantly feeling lost when it comes to my own designs). I will really miss our chats over tea and cake in all the various tea rooms we encountered together.

She is a fellow jeweller and creates lovely pieces using reclaimed material. She is also working on her website http://www.treesandwhatnot.co.uk/.

Helen, I'm really going to miss you

Logo's Are Forever (Unless They Are Changed in Some Way)

So I have been a very busy person and been working on my website. Today I created these logos, the one to the left will be on my business cards/ printed on packaging and the bottom is currently settling in on my website, they still need a bit of work but I think they're getting there.

Oh Cards How You Greet Me....

I have recently been putting some of my line drawings onto greeting cards. The cards are A6 in size and are very simple and I have had lots of comments on how lovely they are. Last month I made some to go into a house as part of the Worthing open house' trail, they were there for a month and sold well.
I aked a local photographer to take some images for me but as you can see they did not particularly work. To be honest he had his work cut out I think. It's not easy taking images of something mostly white and flat, they've ended up not looking like physical cards, if anyone knows the answer to this i'm all ears - make a card thats full of colour I guess?

Leblas, the V&A and I

Yesterday I went to London to meet my good friend Sarah, it had been over a year since I'd last seen her or London recreationally and was well over due. Sarah works for Jewellery designer Leblas who have a beautiful boutique in Sloan Square - I was like a child in a sweet store!

                                                                http://www.leblas.com/

Next it was on the the V&A Museum in South Kensington. This gallery is so beautiful and hosts a fantastically varied collection of decorative artifacts. I will be honest though the big frill for me is the tea room downstairs.

The three rooms were designed by Morris, Gamble and Poynter and were intended as a show room for modern design. When ever I go there I always feel as if I gone to a another time - the scale of detail is breath taking!

Please note I do not own these images

Added To My Folksy Shop

I have just added a few pieces to my Folksy Shop.

These earrings are made of sterling silver and the designs on the surface originate from vintage fabric that I have found or sourced on the internet.

The silver looks white because this is how the material looks before it is shined up, I really like how delicate they look - I somtimes think that shined silver can look cheap.

They are all available to buy and can be found on Folksy http://www.folksy.com/shops/NatalieHayes

Just been shown an amazing website by my friend who is slightly wedding obsessed. On It I saw my ideal dress (I'm not even getting married!) but it's always nice to know my options..........

What A Lovely Weekend

As you all based in the UK know last weekend we had beautiful sunny weather, days like that I can't wait to get into my workshop. I got lots done over the two days and I will post some images of the earrings I made soon. I have a wonderful summer house that I have converted into a really good sized workshop, its great in the summer but I dread going in there when it's really cold and this weekend has been the first time this year that I have gone in there with no heaters on!

So I thought I would share with you some pictures of my work shop and my lovely garden that it lives in.
As you can see it's pretty tidy but this was taken before I had ever used it and its definitaly not like that now.

In The Beginning..........

Hello people, my name is Natalie Hayes and I am going to give this whole social networking thing ago.
I am a jeweller who graduated about four years ago and so far has failed to pull her finger out and really have a good go, this is mostly because I cannot make up my mind about what to make and I flit from idea to idea.

I thought I would start at the beginning and post some pictures of my degree work, here goes..........

For my final project I created a few objects to help various Fairy Tale characters in their plight, the work was titled :
'Objects of Immediate Usefulness in the Context of Surprising Circumstances'

This piece is a bread bin necklace, inside there are little silver loaf earrings to help Hansel & Gretel find their way home.

Just incase the loaf earrings failed I also created a map that winds up into a twig, just for that extra little help - our fairy Tale friends don't have it easy!

Here we have a lovely set of silver spoons to assist Goldilocks, the heads to the spoons unscrew and the handles join together to make one long spoon, easy for reaching through windows - thus ensuring no distractions!

And finally I created a pocket mirror for the Wicked Step Mother of Snow White. It seemed to me that she just suffered from low self-esteem and that maybe just a quick little mantra would help avoid that whole bloody incident with apples.
